Burj Khalifa, Dubai

One of the main attractions in Dubai is the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Opened to the public in January 2010, the 829.84 metre high tower dominates the skyline in down-town Dubai. The observation deck, the world’s third highest, is on the 124th floor and overlooks the Dubai Mall complex onto Sheikh Zayed Road.

Do… book in advance. Pre-booked tickets cost 100AED (€20) while buying on the spot will set you back 400AED (€80).

Do… go around sunset. During the winter months, the sun sets around 6.30pm and during the summer, around 7.30pm. It’s well worth it just to watch Dubai light up.

Do… get pre-paid cards for the telescopes if the weather is especially hazy.

Is it really worth it? Well, if you head up and catch the sunset on a day when the weather is being cooperative, it is well worth it. Nonetheless, the Dubai skyline is quite flat apart from along Sheikh Zayed Road and around Jumeirah and Dubai Marina so expect to see suburbia and desert as well as the bright lights of Dubai.

It’s also worth heading along to watch the fountain show before or after going up into the Burj.
